This Svend Andersen Chopard perpetual calendar with retrograde date from the 1990’s is an absolute neo vintage rarity. Limited to just 100 pieces, this platinum execution was the absolute top of Chopard’s offerings in the 1990’s. Its 36mm case is extremely heavy and has a pleasant rounded shape to it. This particular example is unpolished and has not seen much wear over its lifetime. There is some small imperfections, but overall the watch comes in collector condition. What makes this watch unique is that it combines the perpetual calendar complication with a retrograde date. Which is then housed in an almost sporty looking case. This sporty look is further enhanced by the lume filled hands. Also, it has a screw down crown and case back and the watch was waterproof when it was first sold. It is rather impressive to have a platinum perpetual calendar that can withstand water. Normally they would not travel outside ceo offices and cocktail parties. The design of the movement is by legendary watchmaker Svend Andersen and has his DNA all over it. You can read more on detail about the watch design and history here. If you compare this to his Andersen’s work, his influence is undeniable. This particular example comes on its original alligator strap with platinum buckle. The strap is missing on most examples that have been on the market, but it is interesting to see that its design matches that of the case which elevates the overall look. The quality of the dial is incredible with a sunburst finish and incredible depth to the sub dials. The feel of the platinum on it is just amazing.
