A perfect tool watch

To us at perceptions, this is one of those early Rolex watches that just ticks all the boxes. Of course everyone is familiar with the datejusts and submariners. Our interest in Rolex is in the outliers, the ones that are just a little more peculiar and unique. Here we present a Rolex Air King 5500, and not just any 5500. This early model from 1961 has a lot of interesting features. Its 34mm steel case has not been polished and therefore has a strong and sharp presence. It’s dial is a glossy eggshell colour that we see on some Rolex models around 1960, which creates a very vivid dial. It has an applied gold coloured logo and indexes and beautiful alpha hands. The seconds hand is in blued steel, which gives a little extra vintage charm. It has the designation super precision on the dial, which makes it a little rarer than the regular version. At six o’clock we see the swiss signature, which indicates the watch still has radium lume. This radium lume is fully intact and has acquired a beautiful even patina.

The automatic movement comes in incredibly shape and runs perfect. It features the so called butterfly rotor. On the backside we also see the original horizontal brushed case finish. It comes on a brown nubuck strap that fits the robust, yet classy look. This simply is a great, honest and unusual example of the famous Rolex Air King.
