Among the highlights of the upcoming Rare Watches auction in Geneva on November 11, 2024, Christie’s will present an exceptionally rare and historically significant timepiece: Breguet No. 3218.
This tonneau-shaped perpetual calendar wristwatch, featuring a retrograde date and moon phases, was produced in 1935 and originally sold to renowned French designer Paul Iribe, a key figure in Art Deco design and graphic arts. Iribe’s close ties with Coco Chanel and his pivotal role in design history add to the watch’s already remarkable cultural importance.
Breguet No. 3218 is a milestone in watchmaking. It is one of only two known Breguet perpetual calendar wristwatches with a retrograde date from the pre-war period, marking a groundbreaking achievement in horological innovation.
Signed Breguet, No. 3218, ‘Quantième Perpétuel – date rétrograde, jours et mois guichets, phases de lune’, this watch was sold to Paul Iribe on May 24, 1935, for 10,000 francs.
The estimated value is CHF 100,000-200,000 / €110,000-210,000 / US$120,000-240,000.
